Istanbul’s bid to host the Olympics in 2020 received a boost this month when two of the world’s most exciting footballers, both from the Ivory Coast and currently playing for top Turkish team Galatasaray, gave the city their full support.
Istanbul is competing against Madrid and Tokyo for the 2020 Games, with a final decision due in September in Buenos Aires – hosting the Olympics would be a huge shot in the arm for the Turkish city and its property market, as well as the whole country.
Footballer Didier Drogba, a former Chelsea player and the Ivory Coast’s all-time top goal scorer, said: “Turkey has an excellent sporting culture where the athlete comes first and I hope Istanbul 2020 members can share their deep knowledge with African sports organisers. Istanbul would be an ideal host for the 2020 Olympics – it just has that magic that athletes love.”
While Emmanuel Eboulé made a comparison between London and Istanbul: “Between 2005 and 2011 I was playing for Arsenal in England and I felt London’s enthusiasm towards 2012 grow year-on-year. Istanbul already feels like it has that buzz. There are always sporting events going on and you can’t underestimate the power an inspirational backdrop gives to sportsmen and women. It pushes you to achieve greater heights on the field and the passion of Turkish fans means the athlete experience is first class.”
This month an Istanbul 2020 delegation visited the Ivory Coast for the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) General Assembly, pledging to build on Turkey’s strong links with Africa.
Whether or not the Olympics are staged in Istanbul, the city as some exciting buy-to-let investment opportunities.
