Long sandy beaches, year-round warmth, a lively, well served town centre and very affordable property – is it little wonder that an estimated 12,000 foreign people now live in the colourful resort of Alanya on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast.
According to a news report on the Anadolu Agency, nationals from 43 different countries now live in Alanya, with Danes forming the largest group of foreign nationals there, with 3,821 residents, followed by Germans with 3,482. In total, 12,393 expats have residency and work permits in Alanya, according to the branch of Alanya’s police department that deals with foreigners.
The reasons listed for why the town attracts foreign residents, as well as those interested in just owning property in Turkey include: climate, the beautiful beach, the natural beauty of the area and Turkish hospitality. Highlighting just how expat friendly Alanya has become, the town has a dedicated cemetery for foreigners, as well as a church for Christians.
So what type of property is available in Alanya and where are the best places to buy? On the eastern side of Alanya’s famous peninsula, Obakoy, Tosmur, Mahmutlar and Kargicak are popular areas with a good selection of apartments close to the beach.
Quality two bedroom apartments on a complex with pool are available from around £45,000. On the western side of the peninsula, Konakli, with its array of five-star hotels, attracts many foreign buyers, attracted by the smart new apartments, and the village of Avsallar a little further west still is also increasingly popular.
