It seems that Turkey is not only popular during the summer months for its fabulous beaches and abundant sunshine; it’s now attracting bigger numbers of domestic and foreign visitors to its ski resorts.
The Palandöken Ski Center in Erzurum is still the favourite most head to for skiing and has seen recent heavy snowfalls of over 30cm which saw visitors flock there over the New Year period. The Sway Hotel Deputy Manager Ömer Akça said recently that his hotel is 100 % full. “The ski resort is one of Turkey’s most easily accessible it is located approximately 15km from Erzurum Airport. It is a 1 hour flight from Ankara and almost a 90 minute flight from Istanbul and Izmir” Akça said. It is also famous for having one of the longest natural ski runs in the world.
“One of the most significant characteristics of Palandöken is that it is Turkey’s only ski resort that guarantees snow. Both with investments and artificial snow system made by the government in 2011 and by the private sector, Palandöken provides a ski and snow guarantee for 120 days from December to March,” Akça said. Palandöken provides an opportunity for night skiing via its world-standard lighting system and many new facilities like ski jumping ramps and shooting ramps for biathlons, he added.” Most of our hotel guests are from Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and the Black Sea region. Most of our foreign guests are from Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran but our ski centre is largely filled by domestic ski-lovers,” he said.
If you are looking for a ski resort close to Ankara or Istanbul you can visit Kartalkaya ski centre located in the Köroğlu Mountains in the Black Sea province of Bolu. The resort is located about 45km from Bolu, 186km from Ankara and 263km from Istanbul. The Sarıalan Plateau in the foothills of the resort is charming with its beautiful houses and natural beauty and 113,489 domestic and foreign visitors stayed there in 2016. Turkeys premier ski resort is Uludağ in Bursa it has been the most popular ski resort in Turkey for the last 50 years. Here skiers can ski, snowboard and ice skate for around four months of the year it’s an ideal location just 40km from the centre of Bursa and is popular with both domestic and foreign visitors and in the 2016/2017 winter season saw at least 70,000 visitors descend on its slopes plus it’s the closest ski resort to Istanbul.
Saklıkent ski resort is located in the Mediterranean just 50km from the centre of Antalya and is busy with visitors from December to early April. This is wonderful for all those enjoying the summers in Antalya they can ski in the winter too. The resort sits on the peak of Bey Dağları (Bey Mountains) at an altitude of 2,400 meters, in 2016 around 45,000 people visited there.
