It goes without saying that Turkey is a popular country to visit throughout the season; tourists have been taking their annual holidays here for many a year. The seaside resorts are popular along the Mediterranean and Aegean Coastlines for families and groups of friends to take their much-needed sunshine break and we all know that Istanbul is a firm favourite for that weekend sightseeing getaway to ingest a cultural experience.
However a recent statement has been a welcome surprise for Turkeys tourism, it’s been announced that four of Turkeys cities are amongst the most visited cities in the world. Istanbul and Antalya are no surprises really as we know they are hot spots for holidaymakers, tourists and visitors, Edirne and Artvin are a bit of a revelation to know they too are on the most visited list. In a list released on the 7th November by market researcher Euromonitor International in London, these cities are amongst the top destinations for tourists in the world.
According to the report, Hong Kong reigns supreme with the title of the most visited city in the world, impressively for the eighth consecutive year, followed by Bangkok and London, which represents the most visited city in Europe and the only European city in the top 10 ranking, along with Paris.
Four Turkish cities appeared in the top 100 ranking: Istanbul, once the capital of Turkey, the Mediterranean resort of Antalya, the Northwestern province of Edirne and the Black Sea province of Artvin. Istanbul came in at 15th place with over 9.2 million visitors in the list, Antalya is 29th with over 6.1 million, Edirne 68th with almost 2.8 million and Artvin is 85th with almost 2.4 million.
International arrivals to Antalya and Istanbul have, however, declined considerably on the back of terror attacks and geopolitical instability, it added. Istanbul dropped four places in the global ranking, with -5.8% arrivals in 2017. Nevertheless, Istanbul remained to be one of the top four European destinations along with London, Paris and Rome. Antalya and Edirne also slipped down the ranking over security concerns, according to the recent report.
The only exception in Turkey is Artvin, as it remains a favourite with Georgians. Artvin is one of the top five best performing cities in Europe, and it is as popular as ever, the report read. The ranking is based on Euromonitor International’s research in 100 countries and is based on the number of international visitors that stay 24 hours or more in a city.
We are seeing the numbers of visitors rise once again in the likes of Istanbul and Antalya; yes because of terror attacks these cities took a hit in their number of visitors. However with no recent terror attacks tourists are once again gaining confidence in returning for their summer holidays and city breaks and it looks like 2018 will be a much better year for tourism in Turkey. Some International airlines are increasing their routes for 2018 and adding more seats to destinations across Turkey.
